Who would Jesus love?

February 5, 2009

You have to wonder if Jesus had [semi-]socialist governments in mind when he said that,

The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives, and the regaining of sight to the blind, to set free those who are oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor. (Luke 4:18-19)

Sunday a couple of students and I got to talking over this question: Who are the poor, captive, blind and oppressed when the government is said to take care of them?  Its a question that’s been plaguing me since we arrived.  How can I love someone I can’t find?

Long-term I’m hoping our continued dialogue leaves these students (who I meet with weekly for discipleship) ensnared by the heart of Jesus for the poor–something many Dutch seem content to leave in hands of the government.

Keep praying for these students, as the answers we reach in these forays into the heart of Jesus could be costly…

PS – Our internet has finally arrived and I swear it felt like Christmas around here!  Perhaps the days of hearing news about America from the students (including topics like Obama’s inauguration and the Super Bowl) are over?

PPS – We turned in our Visa applications yesterday without a hitch.  Not that its any real change from before–but all we have left to do now is pray!  We should be getting the documentation we need to open bank accounts and get cell phones soon!
