Gathering as the Church and Eating for Jesus’ Glory

October 3, 2010

Reading through Acts recently.  A couple of things Luke says stuck out to me:

yet [God] did not leave himself without a witness by doing good, by giving you rain from heaven and fruitful seasons, satisfying you with food and your hearts with joy. (Acts 14:17)

When they arrived and gathered the church together, they reported all the things God had done with them, and that he had opened a door of faith for the Gentiles. (Acts 14:27)

Really simple stuff here, but these passages highlighted and reminded me of two things for me.  1) Food and how we eat it and relate to it evidence (or deny) the goodness and provision of God to the world. 2) The work God is doing in the world has always been celebrated in the gathering of the church.

In both of these passages I’m reminded of the oft-repeated maxim/thought/quote/whatever you want to call it: Live in such a way that your life would not make sense apart from the Gospel.  Or, as these verses remind me, try replacing “live” and “life” with “eat” or “gather”.
