What Scripture Would You Like to Memorize?

February 25, 2011

Years ago I participated in a summer long mission trip where we had to memorize 40 or so verses (King James Version of course).  To this day I can still recite many of these verses–and I’m still puzzled by many of them.  Like, what was the deal with memorizing Nehemiah 4:6? “So built we the wall and all the wall was joined together unto the half thereof for the people had a mind to work.”  Huh?  So how do you choose what you’d like to memorize?

I’ve been thinking about memorizing scripture to reflect the basics of the Gospel as we’ve been working through our Basics Series on Sundays and Thursdays.

  • What verses do you see capturing the power of the Gospel well as it is seen through the themes of scripture?
  • What verses would you commit to memory that reflect God’s greatness, graciousness, goodness and gloriousness?
  • What about the purpose of the Gospel as expressed through the story?
  • What events or turning points would you memorize from the story?
  • Where do you see our identity expressed in scripture that you could memorize? (Family, Servants, Missionaries, Disciples)

What verses would you put on the list of verses you’d like to memorize (or that you’ve found helpful to have memorized)?
