Sunday: Won’t you be my neighbor? day

March 16, 2011

I’m fairly certain that when God said to “Love your neighbor as yourself” he handed Moses a picture of Mr. Rogers and added, “Like this guy.”  Whether he is fighting with his wife, or setting up a belligerent tent Fred Rogers, may be one of the most gentle, caring neighbors of all (no he was not a sniper in Vietnam).

It is only fitting, that March 20th–Mr. Roger’s birthday–should be the day we celebrate “Won’t You Be My Neighbor Day”:

Won’t You Be My Neighbor?” Day is an annual event to celebrate Fred Rogers and his legacy of neighborliness on his birthday, March 20th. Neighbors everywhere are encouraged to wear his or her favorite sweater and promote neighborliness throughout America. (from here)

So do a Mr. Rogers spinoff of your own!  Wear a sweater, buy a stoplight for your dining room and go be a neighbor!

One last word: remember of course that your neighboring gains you nothing.  It doesn’t make you a “better person” or prove you to anyone (like this guy was trying to do).  Rather, neighbor because out of who you are (as Jesus points out).  Or, as Mr. Rogers himself has said:

“You rarely have time for everything you want in this life, so you need to make choices. And hopefully your choices can come from a deep sense of who you are. ” –Fred Rogers
