Tools for Connecting Neighbors

October 28, 2011

Just as I’ve started looking for tools for connecting neighborhoods in our area, a little bird told me about an emerging website called Nextdoor.  As the people at Nextdoor describe themselves on their blog:

We’ve listened and learned as neighbors have used Nextdoor to help one another:

• Track down trustworthy babysitters, plumbers, and dentists
• Get the word out about break-ins and other safety concerns
• Organize neighborhood garage sales, BBQs, and block parties
• Ask for assistance in finding lost pets and missing packages
• Create emergency response plans to prepare for crisis situations

In the process, we’ve seen these neighbors bring back a sense of community to their neighborhoods.

The question with a tool like this is, “Will people use it?” Or even, “Will it be around long enough for people to adopt it and use it?”.
